When the autonomous newsroom writes, where its articles go, how it draws on your allowance, and who on your team may switch it on.

The autonomous newsroom writes at the times you choose and delivers the way you choose. Nothing runs around the clock unless you set it to.

Scheduled times

A newsroom writes at the times you add on the domain's page. It needs at least one before it can be switched on. Add more times to write more often; remove them to write less.

At each time, the newsroom writes from its Story ideas list - the stories it found in your topics and places. The newsroom finds ideas ahead of its first time, and you can press Find story ideas for a fresh set whenever you like.

Between your times, nothing is written and nothing is spent.

Where the articles go

Every newsroom starts on review. What it writes arrives in your library as drafts, exactly like an article you asked for, and waits for you to press Publish.

If the domain has a connected site, you can switch delivery to publish on its own. The newsroom then publishes what it writes, except anything it must hold back - an article marked Needs a look, one the Editor-in-Chief did not approve, one short of its minimum sources, or one with a claim the Fact Desk judged could harm a real person. How it uses your allowance

Every article the newsroom writes counts against the same allowance as the articles you ask for - your plan's monthly articles, then any articles you have bought. When the allowance runs out, the newsroom stops writing. It never spends past it.

A few limits keep spending predictable:

Five at a time. Your account writes up to five articles at once; the rest wait their turn in line.
An hourly ceiling. A team can start up to 60 articles an hour, across everything it does.
The schedule is the plan. The newsroom writes only at the times you set, so the number of times is the number of articles you are choosing to spend on.

Being told what happened

When the newsroom publishes an article or holds one, you get a notice in the app and, unless you turn it off, an email. The newsroom email has its own switch, apart from the emails about work you start yourself.

Switching it off

Turn the newsroom off at any time. Turning a schedule off is never refused, for anyone on the team. The articles it already wrote stay in your library.

If the domain's editor of record is removed, the newsroom stops writing on its own and records the reason, until a new one is named.

On a team

Switching a newsroom on, or adding a time, spends money, so it needs the write and spend permission. A member without it cannot start a schedule. Anyone can turn one off.
Only the person who created a newsroom can rename or delete it - the team owner included. Members assigned to it can change everything else.
To stop a member's newsroom from writing, the owner removes their write and spend permission; the schedule checks it every time it runs.
